The reasons people need root canal therapy vary. However, rest assured if Dr. Anderson or Dr. Hoffner at Anderson and Hoffner DentalRoot Canal Center in Findlay, OH, recommend you have this restorative treatment, you'll be back to good oral health in no time. Read here about the treatment and reasons why people need this reliable restoration.

What is root canal therapy?

Simply put, root canal therapy removes damaged, inflamed and infected pulp from the interior of a tooth--specifically, from the slender chambers inside each root. Accomplished entirely in-office with benefit of local anesthetic (numbing shot), root canal therapy preserves remaining hard structure and covers it with a custom-made porcelain crown.

Root canals take up to three visits to Anderson and Hoffner Dental Center in Findlay. The first involves X-rays and examination to diagnose the problem. The next two involve removing the pulp (with tiny metal files), disinfecting the canals, sealing them with a biocompatible putty and and covering the tooth with a temporary crown. The last visit entails placement of the final porcelain crown, a lifelike jacket of premium quality ceramic.

Reasons you need a root canal

Basically, bacteria has invaded the interior of your tooth, causing the pulp to become infected and swollen, says Dear Doctor. Most typically, such a tooth is super painful. Bacterial invasion happens because of large or small cracks in the tooth enamel or from deep decay. Fortunately, root canals relieve pain and pressure, and as the tooth heals, it experiences less and less sensitivity to cold, pressure and heat.

Other signs which indicate need for this restoration are:

  • Drainage
  • Bad breath which does not respond to mouth wash or toothbrushing
  • Dull pain in the area of the frontal sinuses
  • Swelling of the jaw, face, and gums
  • A fistula, or reddened pimple, on the gums near the tooth
  • Darkened enamel
