What is your mouth trying to tell you about your oral health?

A root canal is a common dental procedure our Findlay, OH, dentists Dr. Bill Anderson and Dr. Austin Hoffner perform. Despite what you might have heard, this treatment can actually save your natural tooth and prevent the need for a dental extraction.

A root canal is a minimally invasive dental procedure that goes inside the tooth to remove infected dental tissue. More specifically, when the dental pulp of the tooth has become infected or irritated by trauma or bacteria the only option is to have it removed. This is when a root canal is performed.

Some dental injuries, as well as decayed or infected teeth, may not require a root canal if the problem is detected early on by one of our Findlay, OH, family dentists; however, if you aren’t someone who sees their dentist as often as you should then it’s important that you are able to at least recognize the telltale signs that you need a root canal. These signs include,

Constant Pain

If you have a toothache that is suddenly causing you nagging pain, this could be a sign that the dental pulp is infected. This pain may be persistent, or it may come and go. Of course, any kind of dental pain requires emergency dental treatment so let us know as soon as possible if you are dealing with a toothache.

Sensitivity

A tooth in need of a root canal won’t just cause pain, it may also become more sensitive, particularly to extreme temperatures. Therefore, every time the affected tooth comes in contact with something hot or cold you may experience a lingering zap of pain and discomfort in the tooth.

Discoloration

If you notice that one of your teeth has suddenly darkened or turned gray in appearance this could be a sign that the dental pulp within the tooth has died. The pulp can die if there isn’t enough blood being supplied to the tissue. If you notice this problem, it’s time to see your dentist right away.

An abscess

An abscess is a pimple-like bump that often develops on the gums when a tooth is infected. The abscess may contain pus, or you may notice a sudden bout of bad breath as a result. It’s important that the abscess is treated right away to prevent the infection from spreading.

Don’t ignore any symptoms or signs that may be trying to warn you that you need a root canal. Our Findlay, OH, dental team always provides emergency dental care to our patients. If a toothache is bugging you or you are noticing any of the symptoms above, please call Anderson & Hoffner Dental Center at (419) 424-5850.
