Could changes in your mouth be early warning signs of cancer?
Oral cancer isn’t often as readily discussed as other types of cancer; however, it shouldn’t go ignored. After all, while an oral cancer prognosis is never good news it’s important to have the cancer detected early on by our Findlay, OH, family dentists, Dr. Bill Anderson and Dr. Austin Hoffner. So, when do you get regular oral cancer screenings? Well, during your routine checkups, of course.
If you don’t remember the last time you had a dental cleaning or checkup then it’s a good idea to start with one. After all, these checkups are when our Findlay dentists check for early signs of oral cancer. You may not even know it’s happening because the screening only takes a minute or two and it just involves us examining the soft tissue of the mouth to look for potential red flags and suspicious growths.
Of course, if symptoms do arise it’s important that you give us a call to schedule an evaluation. It is your health, and it’s always important to take it seriously. It’s particularly important to schedule an oral cancer screening if you are experiencing any of these symptoms:
- Any oral sore that bleeds or doesn’t go away
- A growth or lump in the oral tissue
- Difficulty chewing or swallowing
- Jaw pain
- Tongue pain
- Dentures that no longer fit properly
- Loose teeth
- Chronic or persistent sore throat
If any of these symptoms last more than two weeks it’s a good idea to play it safe and schedule an appointment with us. Since there are many conditions and issues that could be causing these symptoms, we will perform a thorough evaluation to determine the root cause before deciding to do further testing for oral cancer.
Who is at risk for oral cancer?
While anyone can develop oral cancer, there are certain factors that can increase your chances, including:
- Smoking or using tobacco products
- Heavy alcohol consumption
- Prolonged sun exposure (particularly the lips)
- A compromised or weak immune system
- Being diagnosed with the human papillomavirus (HPV)
